CROSS BODY BAG with KATE

Thirteen members turned up to either make the cross body bag under Kate's expert tuition or do their own thing.

Kate had produced several versions of the bag to inform and inspire members in creating the bag.
Prior instructions about cutting out the pattern pieces had been given and a link to the  free video on U-Tube, so everyone could turn up prepared for the days sewing.
Although no-one completed the bag that day people were very industrious and went home well on the way to it being finished and I am sure we will see their efforts at Show and Tell next month.

Saturday 19th October 2024            APPLI-PIECING

Ten members attended the workshop on appli-piecing on Saturday 19th October and all went home with a finished or almost finished piece of work which was a good result from the day.

The teachers Karen and Gill were excellent and everyone got some individual attention.

Fabric is ironed onto freezer paper templates and a quarter inch seam allowance edge is first starched and then turned under the freezer paper template. The technique is like building up a jigsaw puzzle of pieces, gluing them together and then sewing them with invisible thread using a small zigzag stitch that hardly shows on the front.

The same pattern was used by everyone but the results were very different depending on fabrics chosen.

Here are the photos from the day.

Saturday 12th Nov 2022.              Disappearing 9 Patch

Today, Kate talked us through the ins & outs of the Disappearing 9 Patch. She is an imaginative and patient teacher who talked us through cutting out, design and construction of this 9 Patch and its’ almost infinite varieties. It was great to support each other, share information and have the time to enjoy our quilting day without interruption.
We had a huge variety of fabrics and designs both traditional and modern. Everyone made a great start but finished the day with much to do at home to complete their project. I can’t wait to see the finished quilts!
For now though, here are some ‘work in progress’ photos

Sunday 15th April 2018                Free Machine Quilting Workshop

Thirteen members of the group eagerly arrived at Hazel Williams workshop, Cotton Cocktails, to do the free machine quilting workshop and we were not disappointed.

Hazel is an excellent teacher and soon gave us the confidence to try swirls and oyster shaped patterns and transform our blank batting sandwiches with colour and texture. She kindly provided us with the materials and threads for the workshop at a very reasonable price so that we could try as many different threads as we did patterns. Everyone achieved a result and some of us even improved our technique.

We also had a chance to shop from her range of fabrics, notions and sewing accessories.

All in all a very pleasant and productive day.

Saturday 22nd April 2017               Wedge Circle Workshop

Another great day of sewing and some stunning work achieved.

This workshop was arranged after members expressed interest in the cushion I had made using a technique by American Quilter Cheryl Phillips.

The pattern is less complex than it looks but relies on the carefully cutting and sewing of 24 wedges of material to make the circle. If this is not done accurately the finished piece does not lie flat at the centre.

We are grateful to CRAFTY-UK for supplying the 15 degree wedge rulers for a very reasonable price which allowed us to run the workshop. As the whole thing could not be sewn in one day, participants made their strip sets in advance, using written instructions and the chance to examine
'one prepared earlier' at the group's March meeting.

With the earlier preparation nobody felt rushed on the day and everyone nearly finished one wedge circle, apart from a little hand sewing still to do at the centre.

Although everyone was using the same pattern they all looked so different due to the different choice of material. Some members even had colour matched nail polish.

And now the finished results  - Well Done Everyone.

Saturday 29th October 2016          Convergence Quilt Workshop

Eleven keen patchworkers spent an enjoyable day of sewing at Dunnington Reading Rooms learning the complexities of Convergence Quilts. This is a technique introduced to the quilting world by Ricky Timms some time ago and has been fascinating sewers ever since.

It relies on the use of interesting fabric and the ratio between the width of the strips of fabric being sewn together. Because of how it is put together you never really know what it will look like until the block is completed.

Kate Smith and myself made up some samples and initiated the others into the method of constructing the block. The rules are fairly simple but you do need to be organised and precise to achieve a good result.

Hilary kindly provided a delicious cake at lunch time, which sustained everyone, and allowed them all to complete their block. The results can be seen below.

Saturday 25th November 2015     Christmas Workshop

    Button Santa with Heather Chalkley

We had a great time at this Saturday workshop working on our Christmas wall hangings. Being away from all other distractions, really concentrates the mind on a project and Heather was an excellent teacher and very patient.

Since I was also trying to be in the kitchen making tea and coffee when she was going through some of the technical stuff I was the one she had to explain it all to again.

Heather had spent a lot of time making up the kits for the project, but since she had cut several different materials for backgrounds and borders, everyone had a choice and even though we were all sewing the same project they began to look very different.

We were a mixture of abilities but Heather got round everyone giving the necessary assistance and advice.

The project was a very good choice to do in a day and although no one finished, it was only the individual trimmings that were not completed on the day.

I have added some photos of the work in progress but hope to have some photos of the finished wall hangings to add after the next meeting.

Thank you to Heather for a lovely day.
